Local Pondhead Charcoal
Our charcoal is locally sourced and Produced by local colliers and other volunteers as part of a local community effort to restore and preserve the area of Pondhead. Leading this movement is the Pondhead Conservation chairman Derick Tippetts and a group of volunteers numbering 150.
The charcoal is produced using modern processes in one of two retorts to produce between 16 to 80 kilos of hazel charcoal at a blistering 600 °C to produce a refined charcoal of 95% purity. These modern processes recycle the gases released by the roasting wood using them to sustain the process in a self terminating cycle reducing the emissions produced by the charcoal and reducing the margin of error in the production cycle.
Ther Pondhead Conservation trust is open to new volunteers with no commitment needed. Work goes on throughout the year with the winter months used for harvesting of the hazel ready for the summer months of charcoal production and timber refining for a variety of other products.
All funds go to the funding of further equipment to help with the conservation efforts.
